Dear Kiwanians –

By the time this newsletter goes to print, we’ll have completed the annual Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast. Thank you to each and every one of you for chipping in and helping wherever you could ... be it selling tickets, moving grills, flipping flapjacks or any of the myriad other tasks necessary to pull this major fundraiser off. I’m proud to say I belong to the BEST service club in Burlington !!!

I was having breakfast with six other men a few weeks ago when our conversation turned to accountability. This particular group of men has met periodically for over seven years now to share our faith, our hopes, and our fears ... and yes, unfortunately sometimes tears. If one of us has something to share, or needs advice or counsel, we can be confident that one of the others will be available ... thus we become accountable to each other. Webster states accountability as “being responsible for”.

Accountability carries over into many areas of our lives. We must be accountable to our spouses and families, our jobs and not the least is to our communities. As Kiwanians, accountability is a necessity. Our club CANNOT survive without a degree of accountability from EVERY one of our members. Vice-president Dave talked about accountability when he told the story of everybody, somebody, anybody and nobody ... the moral of his story being that we all must “be responsible” for sharing the duties of our club. We must “be responsible” for recruiting new members constantly ... without new members our club will eventually just fade away. We must “be responsible” for volunteering to do our part in club activities, be it a fundraiser or a social event ... let’s not let the old 80/20 law (80% of the work done by 20% of the members) work its way into our club. Our accountability doesn’t just affect our club, but it affects all those whom we help as a club. If you can’t sell tickets to the travelogue series, or pancake breakfast, or peanuts ... or volunteer with our Santa project, how do we raise the funds to buy coats, boots, books, provide utility help, grant scholarships, send children to camp or reward students for being good community servants??? You see ... accountability doesn’t just affect us ... it affects the entire community. Get involved ... stay involved. Help us help others.

BE THE CHANGE

Wyman
