Fellow Kiwanian:
Here it is, the
Holiday
season already! This is the time of year
the Burlington Kiwanis Club really shines. This is the time of year that
we work our hardest, we give our money and give of ourselves. This is
the time of year that I am the most proud to be a Kiwanian.
Last month the Santa
Committee started a new fundraiser. We took pictures of kids in their
Halloween costumes at the downtown “Trick or Treat” night. The
weather was lousy, but it was nice and warm in the Burlington Convention
Hall, where the pictures were well organized. I am sure the weather hurt
the attendance of the little Ghouls and Goblins, but for the first year
of a project, I think it went well. Thanks, to the Santa Committee.
The Travelogue is
underway and going very well, we will have a record year this year.
Kudos to “Team Travelogue.”
The next few weeks
are going to be busy ones. This is the time of year when we need the
help of everyone. The Santa Project is starting this month and it
requires a lot of members to “Step up to the Plate”. This is a very
important fundraiser for us, with over $12,000 raised a year ago. For
our newer members, the Santa Project is our number two fundraiser, and
it consists of our members being Santa and Santa’s helpers at Westland
Mall. We then take and sell photos of the little ones on Santa’s lap.
The Christmas
Shopping Spree at Target is December 9th. This is where we invite 25 or
30 underprivileged children to Target for a shopping spree. These are
kids that may not have a merry Christmas without out help. This is a
great service project. It is so gratifying to see the looks on the faces
of these kids when they buy presents for themselves, or family members.
December 7th, at our
general meeting, we will take a collection for our “Coats and Boots
for Tots”. This is another outstanding service project, where we buy
coats and boots for kids that are not able to buy them themselves. Last
year, at our general meeting, we raised about $1,600. Let’s do better
this year.
December 15th is the
day we are “Ding-a-Lings.” (Probably not the only day) But, this is
the day we ring the bells for the Salvation Army. We have traditionally
raised more money, for the Salvation Army, during our day of ringing the
bells, than any other service club. Let’s continue that tradition. We
also ask that if you have corporate or individual gifts for the Army,
you include your gift that day.
Well, we are going
to be busy. We can’t do it without your help. “Step up to the
Plate.” Please be generous this
Holiday
season with your time, and your money.
One other thing I
need to mention. In our last board meeting, there were a number of
people that expressed their concern about some unnecessary talking
during our general meetings. It is not fair to the members that want to
hear the speakers, or to the speakers themselves. So, let’s be
courteous.
Happy
Holidays,
Dave Stoermer, President
